Tule Root Initiative cultivates arts, culture & sustainability projects for those who live on the edge of the Delta in the Northern California Bay Area.

California has had a long history of neglecting water ways; from pollution to the damming of waterways our state has maintained a tumultuous relationship with water. Our group founded this organization with a dream to strengthen our community’s understanding of one another and the ecosystem in which we live within the territories of Miwok speaking peoples in the shadow of tuuštak. Where we operate, within Contra Costa County, has encountered an increase in population impacting our local ecosystems.

Here, the tule is a Native reed grass which cleans our air and waterway. Most preciously, it is an indicator of the health of a wetland. For us the tule is a symbol of resilience. It is an indicator of refuge. The tule is a critical material in the lives of California Native peoples and the nesting habitats for birds, reptiles and pollinators.  We believe in the power of the tule as an entry point for the many people who are guests on this territory to engage in healthy practices with land and water.

It is here, where where we hope to inspire resilience, justice, and tools to imagine sustainable futures rooted in community.
